The Nomadic People’s Network

The Nomadic Peoples Network is a forum where those working to advance the Kingdom of God amongst the nomadic and semi-nomadic ethnic groups can share what they have learned and encourage one another in this specialized cross cultural ministry.

Why is there a need for a Nomadic Peoples’ Network?

Whilst great progress is being made in the spread of the Christian gospel through out the settled world, nomadic and semi-nomadic peoples are being left out and will probably be the last and least likely to hear it. This is through no fault of their own but mainly because of the reluctance of Kingdom workers to live in such inevitably isolated and usually uncongenial areas where they are found: typically semi-arid deserts or high altitude pastures. If nomads are lost it is not by their choice but by chance that they happen live in climates and environments that are unattractive to contemporary workers from settled societies. So we can say that if they are lost it is not by their choice but by the choice of those who are supposed to be looking for the lost sheep about whom Jesus said “Them also I must bring into my fold!”

Statement of Purpose

“We believe that the unique world view, values and lifestyle of nomadic peoples require us to develop an incarnational ministry characterised by:

  • The love of Christ expressed in word and deed, living out the gospel close to the people with a long-term commitment, regardless of severe conditions.
  • An empathy with the nomadic worldview, for example taking a “travel light” strategy in mission.
  • A strategic and Biblical response to the nomads’ felt needs with flexible “opportunism” and learning from the nomads themselves.
  • Involvement wherever possible with the national church, (recognising that they will also need to understand the cultural differences if they are from sedentary societies.)
  • Involvement of those external ministries such as radio and transportation in a sensitive and appropriate way.
  • A commitment to the development of an indigenous church that reflects the realities of the nomadic lifestyle.

Our ministry must demonstrate that the Christian message is as much at home in a nomad camp as in a western church building”

The purpose of this statement and its endorsement by all of those present at the consultation is intended to be a challenge to churches and missions to respond to the daunting task of planting true, culturally relevant churches among nomadic peoples.
